Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Clayton DeBruin, a loving husband, father, brother, son, and uncle. Clayton was born on June 17,1989 in Victoria, B.C. and passed away at the age of 32. Clayton is survived by his wife Sherina, daughter Hailey, parents Robert and Katherine, and brother Robert DeBruin. He is also survived by his father and mother in law, Naresh and Divisha Chatlani, brother in law Dhinesh Chatlani, sister in laws Sarah DeBruin, Priya, and Preeti Chatlani, Tamika Dixon, and nieces Lexus DeBruin, and Amara Chatlani. He was predeceased by grandparents Arnold and Mrytle DeBruin, John and Olga Kushnerenko, and several aunts, uncles, and friends.

Clayton grew up in Sooke, B.C. and spent most of his childhood roaming free in the outdoors. In his early years, Clayton was a member of the renegades football club and then later a proud member of Mount Doug Rams. He loved his sports cars, especially his Camaro and Corvette stingray. Some of his most memorable times growing up were swimming in the Sooke potholes, mountain biking, going to the movies, and getting into mischiefs with his closest friends. Clayton later moved to Burnaby, B.C., where he attended Simon Fraser University and obtained a Bachelors in Criminology degree with distinction. He then worked at BC Corrections where he met his wife, Sherina. Clayton then transitioned his career to working as a Conservation Officer for the British Columbia Conservation Officer Services. He became highly trained and dedicated in his duties of environmental law enforcement, and served in areas such as the Lower Mainland, Sea to Sky, and lastly, the South Okanagan.

Clayton took great pride in any work he did and was known for being a hard-worker and a perfectionist, who had a vivid attention to detail. Some of his proudest moments included obtaining a pilot’s license at a young age, becoming a husband to Sherina, a father to Hailey, and a dog dad to Barkley. From skydiving, to bungee jumping, and paragliding, Clayton always had a thirst for adventure. He enjoyed the outdoors as he loved fishing, hiking, swimming, and camping. He loved to travel and check off new places and hikes with Sherina. Clayton hiked every mountain from the Fraser Valley to Pemberton. He believed there were too many new places to check out before repeating old ones. Clayton also had a soft side, as he loved to sing and play songs on his guitar for Sherina and Hailey. He loved listening to country music, drinking fine wine, and craft beer. He had an eye for photography, and took photos wherever he went.

Clayton was a big foodie who enjoyed cooking. He also enjoyed travelling the world and learning about different cultures. When visiting a new country, he made sure to really indulge. He tried things like haggis in Scotland, pork knuckle in Germany, pig intestine in Hong Kong, and scorpions on a stick in Bangkok. Clayton, you will forever be loved and in our hearts. Your memory will live on through your daughter, Hailey. We love you forever and always, to the moon and back.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Details to follow.
